‘The Day the Social Gospel Died’

The historian Eugene Genovese, back when he was an atheist, once observed that “when I read much Protestant theology and religious history today, I have the warm feeling that I am in the company of fellow nonbelievers.” He thinks many theological liberals are closet atheists. R.C. Sproul, for his part, refers to liberalism as “sheer paganism masquerading as piety.” Al Mohler distinguishes between “true Christianity and its false pretender of theological liberalism.”

Rather than preaching Christ and him crucified, theological liberals [Oklahoma City’s Robin Meyers is a perfect example] busy themselves preaching the evils of Wal-Mart and the glories of Jimmy Carter. Heck, what else can they do? If God doesn’t grant you a regenerate heart, then liberal politics is about all you’ve got to work with.

In his latest column, atheist-turned-evangelical Marvin Olasky reminds us that while liberals “attempt to keep that ol’ time religion alive,” Christians understand that “God changes people one by one.”
